New York’s Next Top Makers is a program designed to ensure all New Yorkers benefit from the rise of independent innovation known as the Maker Movement. New York’s Next Top Makers seeks to increase New Yorkers’ access to new technology, technical know-how and resources, while assisting a cohort of Makers to establish and grow their product businesses in the City. Lastly, the program will connect the surge in prototyping, innovation and production with New York’s historic and important manufacturing sector.
In its second year, New York’s Next Top Makers emphasizes the growth of the Maker Movement through community-building activities, a web portal for resource-sharing and fostering a sentiment of collaboration amongst Makers, designers, manufacturers, engineers, etc. Through a customized 12-month Studio Incubation Program, six Next Top Makers will be selected from the City’s diverse community of hardware entrepreneurs, Makers, engineers and designers to bring their products to market. Following last year’s program, the inaugural cohort of Next Top Makers went on to launch successful Kickstarter campaigns, land institutional purchase orders, receive financial support from organizations such as UNICEF and deploy products internationally in post-disaster contexts.
New York’s Next Top Makers 2014 program consists of three pillars:
A NYC-focused Maker Web Portal (www.nexttopmakers.com): a place for all New York product makers where they can network, learn and build their ideas, as well as connect to spaces, tools and services available across the City.
Community Events: Opportunities for communities across NYC to come together to share ideas, experience and knowledge in the form of a 5-borough Maker tour, a fall and spring Maker Summit and supporting meetups open to the entire community.
Studio Incubation Program: A focused 12-month program beginning in September 2014 for six selected Next Top Makers that will provide support in the form of access to networks, tools and space, legal counsel, product design, supply chain and manufacturing guidance, plus more.
Applications to be part of the Next Top Makers Studio Incubation program are open now through September 3rd. Public voting will take place from July 23rd through September 10th. The Next Top Makers selected for the Studio Incubation program will be announced at NYC MakerFaire in September.
